3 Kid-Friendly Meals You Can Make on the Grill

The quarantine does not seem to end and with Omicron causing fresh new cases, we are all back in our homes again with zoom school and work from home. Sometimes, having an office from home can also be hectic as you are constantly juggling important work calls and deciding what to make for lunch/dinner. In some cases, you also have to come up with something tasty and healthy that caters to your child’s tastebuds if they are a fussy eater. Doing all this while having the responsibilities of a full-time job is not easy, but having foolproof recipes that are quick and healthy makes it a little easy!  So here are 3 kid-friendly meals that you can make on the grill!

Grilled Burgers– Now you might think that burgers for dinner are far from healthy, but in an age where there are so many healthy vegans and alternative meat options, it makes mealtimes a breeze for parents. Opt for whole wheat burger buns like these Paushtaa Wholewheat Sesame buns or you can step it up a notch and get gluten-free burger buns for a clean dinner option!  When it comes to the meat, thankfully there are so many vegan and alternative options in the Indian market that you can choose from! Like this Wakao foods Jackfruit patty that tastes eerily similar to the chicken patties that we are so used to or the internationally renowned Beyond Burger plant-based meat alternative that packs the punch of plant protein and nutrition! Grill the burgers as specified in the packaging, and then toast the buns in the rendered down juice of the patty. Take the buns off the heat, and then add in your veggies and make sure you turn on the heat so that veggies have a good char. As a dressing, you can make a delicious, spicy, sweet, and creamy dressing that is bound to be the cherry on the cake! Mix in a tablespoon of mayo, honey, tabasco, or sriracha and beat it well. Add in some fresh parsley and cilantro and finish it off with some lemon. Serve hot!

Grilled Pomfret– This is probably the easiest dish you will ever make! Fish is an amazing source of protein and is rich in essential omega fatty acids that are great for brain development and is a source of healthy fats. Every Indian household has its signature fish dish, whether it is Meen Mouli from Kerala, Shorshey Ilish from Bengal, or Surmai Rava Fry from the coastal bylanes of Goa and Maharashtra! Silver pomfret fresh from the sea is perfect for this recipe! Depending on your taste buds or where you are from, the marination of the fish will be different, but a tried and tested marination recipe that always works well is this- Lemon, oil, salt, garam masala, cumin powder, coconut sugar, and garlic and ginger. Make sure you are marinating your fish in this mix for at least an hour before you place it on the grill. A pro tip when handling fish- fish whatever shape or form, cooks quite quickly so it is essential that you control the heat settings so that it does not become rubbery. The fish should be flaky and should retain its original taste along with the spice mix. A great way to ensure this is to crank the heat of the grill to the highest in the first 30 seconds for those perfect grill marks. Then reduce it to the lowest setting and let it grill for 10 minutes. Finish the dish with a sauce of your liking. We recommend a Tarka- heat some oil and add curry leaves, cumin seeds, mustard seeds, dried red chili, slit green chilies, and some haldi. Let the spices crackle for a minute and pour this oil over the grilled fish. Serve with some hot rice and ghee and you have got a perfect meal!

Grilled Chicken Tacos– Want your children to get a good dose of healthy protein, but they are not big fans of curry? Then chicken tacos are the way to go! Marinate chicken in oil, garlic, chili powder, paprika, rosemary, oregano, and red peppers. Leave it for two, before you place it on a grill. Make sure you butterfly the chicken before you place it on the grill to ensure even cooking. Next, maintain an even heat temperature throughout and grill the chicken till it is tender. Once done, using two forks shred the chicken into pieces. You can even let your kids do this under your watchful eye! Get some taco shells, some yummy taco sauce, a bit of honey, and some cheese. Your kids can make their tacos according to their liking and that’s dinner done in 20 minutes!
