5 Kid-Friendly Hiking Spots Near Bengaluru

The great outdoors! Finally, after a year and a half of indoor exercise sessions, it is finally time to take your kids out to the outdoors and experience nature like never before! Because of the pandemic, our kids have become way too comfortable on their couch, with their phones and Netflix, and weaning them off the screens can be tricky. A great incentive and activity idea to break the monotony can be to take the kids on a hike. Hiking may seem daunting for a few first-timers, but worry not, we have some easy and beautiful trails for you to try right outside Bengaluru, which will truly inspire your kids to get off the couch and go on an adventure to see nature like never before.  Before heading out, make sure stocked on juices and snacks as hiking is quite a physically intensive activity, please carry sunblock too for you and your kids, and make sure to be safe- carry sanitizers and masks! 

Handi Gundi Betta- This hiking spot has a glamorous history of its own as this is where Sholay was shot. It is 60 km away from Bengaluru, located near Ramanagara is truly a trekker’s and a tourist’s paradise because of its history and a variety of trailers suited to different levels of expertise making this a great choice for kids! This trail is also nicknamed the lazy man’s trail so be rested assured that your kids can easily be comfortable on this hiking trail, additionally due to the fact that this trail has a lot of grass, easier on your kid’s feet. This trail starts after crossing near the Basavanpura railway track and can be a great choice for a fun weekend day hiking trip for your kids! 

Anthargange- This hiking spot is 70 km away from Bangalore and offers a unique experience to its visitors. Tourists are often excited to explore the numerous caves that are located here, making this truly an adventurous hike for your kids. The trails are also short so it is not that taxing on your kids. Another unique thing about Anthargange is that they also offer adventure activities like rock-climbing and bouldering as the hillocks are made of volcanic rocks and boulders. For your little history buff, Anthargange is also dotted with a lot of historical temples and sites on the trail which will truly interest them. Its natural beauty is accentuated due to the presence of natural springs in the area making this truly one of the must-visit hiking trails outside Bangalore! 

Nandi Hills- This spot is just 35 km east of Bangalore, making this one of the closest hiking trails near the city! This spot is 4500 ft above sea level giving gorgeous views from the top which is sure to impress your kids! The great thing about this trek is that it has something for everyone with varying levels of expertise so your kids will truly enjoy this trail.  Boulder hopping is a fun kid’s activity that you can try in Nandi Hills. When you get to Nandi Hills, make sure you navigate your way to Shanidevara Devalayakke Dari which is the starting point of the trek. 

Makalidurga- Another one for the history buffs, Makalidurga is a tourist’s delight because of the presence of old temples and forts situated on the trail. This place is located  10 km away from Doddaballapura and is also a popular pilgrimage. This trail is easy for the kids as the hillocks are closer together and has a great mix of forests, hills, and forts providing a diverse experience to them. The top of the trail has gorgeous views as it is situated near the ruins of an old fort and towers over the hill railway track! 

Turahalli- This trail is quite easy for the kids and takes around 30 minutes to complete! Expose your kids to the city’s only surviving forest with vibrant greenery and fauna which is sure to provide a delightful sensory experience to your kids. You can also plan a picnic at the end of the trail which stops near an old temple and a big tree. Just take the Kanakpura road to Turahali Village to reach this trail.
