The great outdoors! Finally, after a year and a half of indoor exercise sessions, it is finally time to take your kids out to the outdoors and experience nature like never before! Because of the pandemic, our kids have become way too comfortable on their couch, with their phones and Netflix, and weaning them off the screens can be tricky. A great incentive and activity idea to break the monotony can be to take the kids on a hike. Hiking may seem daunting for a few first-timers, but worry not, we have some easy and beautiful trails for you to try right outside Mumbai, which will truly inspire your kids to get off the couch and go on an adventure to see nature like never before. Before heading out, make sure stocked on juices and snacks as hiking is quite a physically intensive activity, please carry sunblock too for you and your kids, and make sure to be safe- carry sanitizers and masks!
Ajoba– Ajoba is located on one of the highest peaks of the Sahyadri Range-Asangaon which is located about 70 km away from Mumbai. It is a great trail for kids as they can explore a variety of things here- like the famous Valmiki Ashram which is located halfway to the peak or the Lav Kush caves which are located near the waterfalls. You can easily reach this place easily by driving up to Dehne which is the village at the foot of the hill which is the starting point of the trek. You can also opt for a night trail, but it is advised you go with an experienced adventure group.
Karnala Bird Sanctuary- This is a great trail for your budding nature buff! This sanctuary is located 60km away from Mumbai and is great for kids as the trail is filled with exciting forests and birds which your kids will love to spot! You can drive up to their forest check gate where you can park your car for free and hike to the forests and the bird sanctuary. This is also a great option for a camping site if you want to go on an overnight trip to this place!
Sanjay Gandhi National Park- The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is definitely the lungs of the city of Mumbai as it is home to a splendid array of bio-diversity in flora and fauna. The park has numerous interesting trails that will surely delight you and your wildlife-obsessed kid. One of the most exciting treks is the Shindola trail which is a 1.5 km trail- an easy and quick trail that follows a lightly wooded forest and ends at a seasonal stream. Make sure you have acquired the special permission that is required to go on this trial. Your kids can learn and observe the different varieties of insects, butterflies, and small animals they discover on this fun trail!
Tungareshwar- This trail is about an hour and a half away from Dadar which is a must-visit. Because of its gorgeous rain-soaked views and forest streams that are located here. Your kids can spot bees, damselflies, tailorbirds, coucals, and dragonflies on this trail which will surely bring out their inner nature buff. This trail also has the famous Vasai Fort and a Shiva Temple located here for the history buff. Surprise your kids with the majestic views of the waterfalls at Kaman Phata which is located near the trail!
Bhivpuri Waterfalls- An exciting trail for the kids, this is truly a must-visit trail for the entire fam. Treat your kids to verdant vistas of green meadows and the beautiful site of animals grazing. There is also a beautiful stream and a slope that falls on the trail to the waterfall and the climb is fairly simple making this a great and easy option for your kids. As an added bonus, there are a lot of adventure sports options located here like rock climbing and rappelling that take place here!
