5 Plants That Will Introduce Your Kids To Gardening

Nurturing your child’s green thumb can start as early as you would like, as gardening is one of those holistic habits that grow into a treasured hobby as the kids grow older. What’s more, it is an eco-friendly hobby too, as they get to experience nature first hand and experience the joy of cultivating something on their own. It also helps to increase eyesight, motor hand and eye coordination, sleep and is also linked with better performance at school. Here are our suggestions on some easy plants that your children can easily plant!

Snap Peas–  Sugar snap peas are very easy to grow and can be a great introductory plant to start off! They only need moderate support so it is very easy to maintain. Their big seeds can be easy to handle with small fingers, and you can even eat them raw, cooked, or raw out of the garden! You can use a standard tomato cage and keep it moist. These peas will germinate in about 2 weeks depending on the temperature of the soil, harvest them right off the vine when their pods have become quite fat. To harvest, ask your kids to hold on to one side of the vine and gently tug the pea pod away from the vine to ensure the pods are not ripped off when you harvest them! Cherry Tomatoes– Cherry tomatoes are gorgeous, aren’t they? And they taste even better!  You can get a tomato plant from your local or even online nursery and enquire after kid-friendly variants. Cherry tomatoes tend to ripen early which is great for impatient kids! They are usually planted during mid-May for great quality produce!

Pumpkin-   Pumpkins, although not as nifty as snap peas and cherry tomatoes, are great if you have older kids. Their vining leaves are quite charming to young kids which resemble the ones they see in their storybooks. You can plant three to five seeds of loose, rich soil, and for speedy germination, plant these during the winter in the cool soil. Nudge your kids to check on the germination process daily, and cut off all the healthy seedlings at the soil level. Give your pumpkins enough sunshine to grow!

Cucumbers- Growing cucumbers is literally child’s play, and cucumbers are great starters for your kid’s gardening journey. These delicious vegetables can be grown in any space.  Your kids can even make delicious cucumber pickles by just slicing cucumbers, a little salt, apple cider vinegar, and refrigerate for 30 minutes! They have large seeds and be sown 6-8 seeds at a time in a fertile hill of loose soil. The best time to plan them is around mid-May or June, peak summertime as they make for a delicious summer-time snack for your entire family!

Potatoes- A great introductory plant to start off your kid’s gardening journey, the planting process for this vegetable is equally as fun as harvesting it. Usually, people plant a part of the spud that they buy at the local vegetable market, but if you want good quality vegetables that your kids will be proud of, get the potato starters at your local nursery, they ensure healthy growth of the plant! Potatoes start germinating soon after planting making it a great option for impatient young kids! Start off with digging 4 inches deep into moisture-retentive soil, making sure your tubers have enough space to grow. Be wary of the green color which might form on the tuber, as it indicates that the potatoes have become toxic. Harvesting them is simple and super kid-friendly. They can use forks and gently harvest them off the soil. Simple, fast, and efficient, potatoes are a great option for your kids!
