How often do you find your children fidgeting with their phones, pencil box, laptops, basically doing everything but studying during the fixed time? We are pretty sure this is a common struggle for any parent with a teenager. The most common reason for flailing concentration levels has got to be the collective reduction in our all attention spans since the start of social media and the dreaded scroll culture. With the advent of 10-second reels and Tik Toks where entertainment is provided in a matter of seconds, teenagers and children get habituated to maintaining such short attention spans leading to high chances of getting distracted during study time. So, to address these problems, here are 5 efficient tips to avoid distractions during study time.
The Reliable Tech-Free Method- Well, we all know that all screens should be away during study time, but how much is that effective when we gravitate to more screen-based learning resources due to the pandemic? We need to come up with restrictions related to the digital study to enable distraction-free study time. A great way to do this is by activating the airplane mode on the tablets and laptops if studying does not require an internet connection. You can download all the pdf of the reading material from beforehand, and let your teen read them on your laptop or phone by activating airplane mode that stops any sort of notifications or access to the internet. You can also enable parental control during the time of studying on your child’s laptop or tablet, to establish a strict policy of no-tech distractions during study time.
Meditation- To reduce distractions, one needs to improve concentration levels. An efficient way to do so is by meditation. Meditating for 5 minutes a day can drastically improve concentration over time and the logic is simple. If the mind spends 5 minutes just focusing on one thing instead of being over-stimulated, the result is going to be positively skewed towards concentration. Every teenager may not accept meditation readily as the concept seems boring and intimidating, but thankfully there are quite a few apps these days, that make meditation teen friendly-like Calm and Headspace.
Proper Sleep- Is your child sleeping through the night? This is the most important question you need to ask before you consider any sort of solution. Sleep is the most important activity for any growing child, as sleep facilitates the working of all organs and generates important neural connections that maximize the performance of the brain. With that comes proper concentration, memory and reasoning skills, and reduced chances of distraction. In short, sleep is paramount to concentration.
Proper Diet- Along with sleep, another causal factor for optimum brain function is a proper diet, and by that not just salads and soups! Protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs are equally important for optimum functioning of the brain, especially protein as they aid in the formation and repair of new cells and muscles. Apart from that, fatty acids and Omega are really good for brain development and increased concentration during study time.
A Dialogue, Not A Monologue- Understanding that study time involves both the effort of parent and child, it is important that you have a two-sided conversation about the same. Arbitrary measures help no one and time and again, it has shown that more stringent measures pave the way for rebellious behavior. Instead of confiscating all gadgets during study time, incentivize screen time with study if you have younger children. If you have teens, making them aware of the effect of distractions, in the long run, is a much greater way of reducing distractions than by just confiscating everything in one go. Understand their point of view by asking why they are prone to distractions and arrive at a possible solution, collaboratively and not arbitrarily.
