The pandemic made us realize how important it is to be a part of the community and to support each other to find solace in these trying times. As we realize this, it is also important that we share our knowledge with our children. If you’ve been thinking of teaching your children the importance of community and empathy, here are 5 ideas for social activities for teenagers that can truly empower them to make a difference.
Volunteer at Clean-Up Drives- Climate change truly will take up precedence as the biggest threat to humanity in the coming years and teens these days are quite aware of this looming crisis. Show them that they can be a part of solving this by taking small steps like volunteering at the clean-up drives. Whether it is the local beach clean-up or plastic-free drive, even taking this small step can be a catalyst for bigger changes in the future.
Each one, Teach one- The noblest thing that your teens can do is try to impart the same quality of education that they have been blessed with. A great example of social activities for teenagers is taking the initiative to teach others in their surroundings who are less fortunate and eager to learn. Although education is a basic right, it is still a distant dream for many kids. You can ask your teen to donate their old books to local shelters and donate their free time to teaching young kids some basic math or science. Doing good does not essentially mean donating money, it can also be donating your time and attention for the betterment of others, and this is a great way to teach your teens that.
Green Dream- You can ask your teen to get their friends for this activity. With organized groups, your teens can go on a planting drive with their friends where they meet a target of planting a set number of trees by the year or the month. This is a great way in which they can contribute to the environment, as they are not just helping nature, but future generations, by ensuring that there is clean air and reduced pollution in the days to come.
Volunteer During Festivals- We always equate festivals with grandeur and opulence. This festive season tries to change the narrative by making it a tradition to incorporate charitable ventures during the festivities. It is a common norm to donate old clothes and books, but what if during the festive season your teen takes the initiative to buy new clothes and toys for the underprivileged during the festive season and distributes it themselves? Volunteering in person can help your teen recognize the faces that they are actually helping to empower them to believe that they too, can necessitate change through small steps. Your teen has probably been gifted a lot of new clothes and toys that have brought joy to them, but what if they can extend the same happiness to someone else?
Organizing Events and Activities- A great example of social activities for teenagers, your teen can take the initiative to make someone else’s day by just hosting an impromptu concert, play, or activity. Your teen’s friends can also collaborate. They can stage a play, or if they are musically inclined they can play a couple of songs for the audience. You can help them out by planning the itinerary and arranging some snacks and drinks for the kids. The teens can also use this opportunity to bring awareness to a particular topic relevant to the audience like- the importance of education, saying no to child labor, and equality between two genders. Another socially relevant topic they can bring awareness to is encouraging the kids to get vaccinated through creative methods such as play or through songs. This not only helps the kids and creates awareness around health and safety but also contributes greatly to the community!
