5 Netflix Shows That Promote Emotional Development In Adolescents

As teenagers navigate their emotions, raging hormones, and an ever-changing social environment, they often feel isolated and anxious. As parents, being their solid support system during these times can help them grow and develop healthy emotional patterns, and also foster a healthy relationship between you and your kid. Navigating your way to forge healthy interactions can get confusing, and there is nothing like a TV show that you and your teen can watch that will not only bring the both of you closer but will also help your child grow emotionally and help them sustain healthy patterns of dealing with their volatile emotions.

Here are 5 TV Shows on Netflix that can help you do just that-

Stranger Things- Supernatural abilities, monsters, telekinesis- now this may not seem like a promising premise for an emotional development-friendly show for kids, but trust us! This show, while it deals with supernatural elements, gets teenagers right as they follow a group of teenagers as they cope to keep up with the mental health and societal struggles of being teenagers (with supernatural abilities). Through this show, they rightly show how parents have a great responsibility and impact on their children, through Joyce and Hop. Hopper’s emotional relationship with his adoptive daughter Eleven, the main hero, healed the emotional trauma that Eleven had gone through in her children. It shows that every teen, or person even, has their unique but endearing ways of expressing their thoughts, whether set in a supernatural setting or not, we all deserve an equal chance at love and comfort!

Gilmore Girls- Gilmore Girls is a heartwarming show centered around an endearing mother-daughter relationship set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow.  Lorelai Gilmore, a single and independent mom shares a close bond with her teen daughter who was born to her when she was a teen, while Lorelai’s own relationship with her mother is spurious. It follows closely the struggles and the joy of parenthood and working-class life and takes the views on a heart-warming journey of love, loss, and hardships of the lives of Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter as she tries to provide the best life for her daughter in spite of financial struggles. Rory Gilmore, her daughter, a gifted child tried to be the best daughter for her mother and work her way through the top of the academic chain, with a little help from her estranged grandparents. This show will keep your teen hooked till the end!

Elite- Set in Spain, this story follows the lives of teen students of the Las Encinas school, from vastly different backgrounds. This show follows the unique struggles of working-class and elite teens who suffer from their own unique mental health and societal struggles. A riveting story from start to end, with murder, romance, heartbreaks, and love, this show works very well to draw parallels between the lives of students who have different means. It deals with teens who are yet to come to terms with their identity, sexuality, ambitions, and social position.  With Season 2 released this summer, and Season 3 in the pipeline, Elite is a must-watch teen drama!

Sex Education- A hilarious, sensitive, colorful, and emotional take on the struggles of teen life- Sex Education has broken all records when it comes to teen dramas. It has become a worldwide sensation due to its nuanced, offbeat, and sensitive take on mental health and sexuality in teens and starts important conversations surrounding the same. Following the lives of students of the fictional Moordale Secondary School, Otis, a 15-year-old Sophomore starts counseling his fellow classmates regarding matters in their social and personal lives, which is heavily inspired by the counseling of his own well-established psychiatrist mother Dr. Jean Milburn. While using hilarious scenes and heart-breaking plots, Sex Education treats heavy topics with the ease and the innocence of the teens watching them. A great, educational and informative show for your teen to watch, Sex Education, is surely changing the narrative regarding teen mental health.

Umbrella Academy- Superheroes with an emotional side? Sign us up! Or your teen, because we know they will love this! Umbrella Academy is the T.V adaptation of the cult-favorite comic series by the same name created by Gerard Way.  In 1989, 43 infants are born to women who show no signs of pregnancy the day before, and 7 of them are adopted by Reginald Hargreeves, who starts the Umbrella Academy to train these young kids into complicated adults with supernatural abilities that create emotional and mental struggles for them. As they grow, their family fractures and the adopted siblings show disdain for each other, but a series of family mysteries and conspiracies bring them closer as they need to work together to save the world. This show does great to deal with the emotional and unique emotional struggles of stereotypical heroes and unravel a side of them that is usually not dealt with in superhero shows. Umbrella Academy takes the superhero genre and treats its characters with nuance and a sense of realism to show that greatness does not come from apparent qualities. A great show for teens to watch, this will help in the emotional development of your teens as they begin to look through the people’s invisible walls!
