Halloween Special: Easy DIY Ideas For Your Kids To Do At Home

It’s officially the season of pumpkin spice and everything nice! Halloween is probably one of the favorite holidays of any age group, as people get very creative with their decorations and costumes during this time.  Kids are especially pumped about this holiday as they get to embody their superheroes or idols and indulge in bags full of treats! Always on a sugar rush, it might get difficult to help them focus on one task during these holidays. Fret not! Here are some fun DIY ideas for your kids to do at home, as it not only engages them but also encourages them to use their hands and create something by themselves and fosters independence. Hope this list helps!

Spooky Decorations- Whenever we think of Halloween decor, the imagery of Jack’O Lanterns is the first thing that pops up in our minds. Get your kids to carve their own (under your careful eye of course.)  Firstly, you need to clean out the pumpkin by removing the flesh and stems before use. You can make the first cut, and then guide your child to take out the seeds! Make things easier by asking your kids to trace the mouth and the eyes of the Jack’o’ Lantern before they start carving. You can also let your kids decorate them as they like-you can use paints, glitter, ribbons,stickers-let your child’s imagination run free! Once they are done decorating and tracing the outline of the figure, help them carve out the eyes and the mouth using a butter knife, and

Halloween Special Cookies-Whip up some special Halloween cookies with your children. By using a basic cookie recipe, and a little magic of fondant, you can easily make this recipe with your kids and they can try their hand at baking some delicious cookies for Halloween.

  •  Before you start using the fondant, you need to make some basic sugar cookies. Preheat your oven to 250 deg.
  • You need 2 cups of all-purpose flour, a cup of unsalted butter, 1 cup of sugar, and a teaspoon of vanilla.
  • Cream together the butter and sugar, and then add the flour and vanilla.  Scoop up balls of the dough, around an inch, and flatten a little further, encourage your kids to roll the cookies and flatten them!
  • Involve your kids in deciding the shape of the cookie cutters and let them cut out their favorite shapes before you pop them in the oven!
  • Once formed, bake in the oven for 16 minutes, let it cool completely before you start the decor.
  • If you are making pumpkin-themed cookies, make sure to tint the fondant with some orange edible color for the decor.
  • Knead your fondant, again this is a great activity for kids to get their hands dirty and create their own wonderful creations. Once kneaded, use the same cookie cutters to carve them out in the shape of your cookies.
  • Stick the fondant on the cookies, with a little bit of water, and you have easy Halloween cookies ready!
  • To kick it up a notch, you can also let your kids draw some googly eyes on the cookies using edible markers

The D-I-Y Mummy Doll- Nothing spells out Halloween than a good old spooky mummy! Great news, your kids can make their own at home, using basic at-home products! Here’s what you need:

  • Cardboard Rolls- these usually come in your packaging and are thrown away, or you can also get craft rolls if you can’t find any cardboard rolls.
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
  • Gauze
  • Black Paint
  • Scissors
  • Start off with painting your craft or cardboard roll in black and once done, let the roll dry before you proceed with the next step.
  • Once the paint has dried, glue on those googly eyes and let them dry.
  • Next, wrap the gauze all over the roll.
  • Secure the gauze, and if there is a little extra, cut it off, and glue on the stray ends.
  • And there you have it your child’s very own Mummy Doll, made at home!

The Crayon Pumpkin-More often than not, we find ourselves tripping over a piece of stray crayon from the innumerable sets of crayons that we get our kids. This Halloween, give these raggedy old crayons a purpose and much-deserved second life by including them in your Halloween decor. You won’t even need to clean out or hollow out the Pumpkin for this activity, as this activity involves the outer skin of the pumpkin. This can also add to your decor, as these pumpkins lend some serious charm to your home during the Halloween season.  Your older kids will love this activity! Start off by chopping the crayons up into little pieces. Once that is done, place a piece or two near the stem of the pumpkin, and using a hairdryer on low heat, melt the crayons near the stem of the pumpkin. We recommend using different shades for the drip for a cool ombre crayon drip. You can amp it up by covering this decor in string lights during the evening!
