Fine motor skills help us perform daily detail-oriented movements. These skills are developed by bringing attention to specific movements. There are certain activities that help develop fine motor skills in kids by training in hand-eye coordination, teaching maintaining balance, as well as the ability to grasp or hold objects, among other things.
Check out these five activities you can do with your toddlers at home. Suitable for children between ages 2-4 years, it is recommended that these activities be carried out with supervision.
Combine a little biology lesson and hand development through gardening!
Different motions that gardening involves are very helpful in developing fine motor skills in toddlers – be it grasping tools, planting seeds one by one, or digging and lifting mud. Check out MyBageecha for grow kits that are made for kids to work with.
Sensory soap makes for a fun afternoon activity, and is a wonderful sensory activity for toddlers. The cleaning up process is made easy by the fact that you’re basically cleaning up soap, so that’s a big plus! You can read more about how to make the soap here. We recommend Tide’s Lime and Mint detergent for this activity because it brings a fresh fragrance to sensory soap. This is an activity that the kids will love, and it’s a great way to develop fine motor skills, as well as a way for kids to visually and tactically experience touch and smell.
Have a large tin of spare change lying around? Get your kids to sort them out! Apart from helping you with organisation, this is a great fine motor activity for preschoolers. There are several skills to be learnt in such an activity – learning to identify coins, dexterity from picking them up from a flat surface, and in-hand manipulation, among others. Prop up different containers for the different types of coins, and get your kids to put the coin into the assigned container. This activity is suitable for kids who are old enough not to swallow coins.
Pasta necklaces are one of those classic kids activities, and that’s because it’s a great way to promote motor skill development – picking up pasta, threading it through wool, creating patterns – working with your fingers, this activity packs in a lot of learning. And the best part is that you get a piece of jewellery at the end of it!
Pro tip: You can dye uncooked pasta different colours with Pidlite’s acryclic colours to add another fun sensorial element to this activity that’s perfect for kids.
Kneading and moulding Working with playdough is a great activity to develop motor skills in kids. It’s fun and can also be calming (for adults too, so don’t hesitate to get down and dirty with your kids!) From the huge world of playdough activity ideas for toddlers out there, we loved Hamley’s Play-Doh activity set to keep the toddlers engaged.
These are some of the ways to keep your little ones interested, and grounded. Do you have anything you’d like to add to this list? We’d love to know! Please comment!
