How To Make An Eco-Friendly Ganesh Idol At Home With Ingredients From Your Kitchen!

With Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner, involve your kids in the celebrations by following this foolproof guide to making idols at home. These activities for kids not only enhance their creative abilities but also make them feel involved in preparations involved to bring Bappa home, and what better way than making an eco-friendly ganesh idol with their own hands!
With almost 2033 metric tonnes of waste generated by immersing Ganesha idols, it is important that we enable our next generation to use more sustainable measures in their day-to-day life. Besides teaching them to go green and plant more trees, making an idol from scratch is a great hands-on way to instill this habit in them. You can make an eco-friendly Ganesha Idol using just kitchen ingredients at home! You will need-

  1. 5 tbsps Turmeric
  2. ½ teaspoon sugar
  3. 2 cups of Flour
  4. Milk, to knead.
  • Help your child to knead the dough, so that it reaches the consistency of a play-dough.
  • Now assist your child to take half the dough and mold it into a sphere which will be the stomach.
  • Now, take a part of the remaining dough and stretch it to make the legs. While stretching some cracks may form, which can be easily sealed with milk.
  • Take the remaining part of the dough and mold it to form the head. Keep sealing the molded parts with milk to avoid cracks.
  • Give your child the creative liberty to form Ganesha’s trunk and ears by themselves and watch them come up with fun shapes for the idol!
  • Use the remaining dough to craft the hands of the idol.
  • Use whatever is left to make circular figures for the ‘mukut’
  • For the eyes, you can use whole black peppers or cloves, and for the tusks, you can use matchsticks.
  • Let them dry for a day or two and your Ganesha idol is ready!

After the festival is over, you can take the Ganesha idol and use it as compost for your plants. Do this activity with your kids to give them a wholesome introduction to sustainable habits. Following the completion of Ganesh Chaturthi, immerse the idol in a bucket of water and let it stay there till it dissolves. This water can then be used to nourish your plants as it has a lot of nutrients (Psst- this can also serve as a great gardening tip for your teenager, who is starting to garden by themself!)
