Get Some Help: 5 Fun Ideas To Get Your Teen To Help Around The House

The pandemic has forced us all to be constricted within the four walls of our home, and growing children and teens are probably the people who are most affected by it. With school being shifted online, teens are mostly sitting in one corner of the home most of the time, and resorting to their screens for leisure time. With more people at home, the brunt of the housework predominantly falls on the adults at home. Well, it’s time you changed that! Get your teens to help around the house and convert chores into fun activities for teens with these ideas!

The Money Laundry Game- See what we did there?! Well, folding laundry is quite the drudgery for any age, and it can be increasingly frustrating if the onus is just on one member of the household. Engage your teens in this seemingly boring housework by incentivizing this task. Make this even more competitive if you have more than two kids or teens in the household. You can assign points to different types- bedding and sheets can get 3, t-shirts and jeans can get 2, and socks and innerwear can get 1. Once the points have been assigned the teens can fold the laundry and place it in the appropriate place within the time limit. Post that, you can judge whether they have been folded neatly and placed in the appropriate place, and on that basis, you can give out the points. Your teens can cash in their points at the end of the month for their favorite treat or just simple money to buy whatever they want!

Masterchef At Home- In the last year, there have been so many trending dishes and food items like the Dalgona coffee, that your teens have probably begged you to make. Sitting at home, you may have also caught up on an episode or two of the globally beloved Masterchef- well, why not recreate that at home! Teens often are very picky with their food and only show an affinity for certain foods. Get them to get their hands dirty in the kitchen.  Cooking an entire meal is one of the most important skills and is an engaging thing to do for a 15-year-olds. You can decide the theme or the cuisine and your kid will have to cook up a meal, simple or fancy, under a certain time limit. You can even mimic your favorite Masterchef shows, where they work under a time limit! Make sure that your teen takes appropriate precautions while using the stove or sharp objects. Getting them to cook makes your teen truly appreciate the hard work and effort that goes behind getting a proper meal on the table.

Green Thumb- The pandemic had us relying on online grocery deliveries for a long time, with so many items out of stock due to huge demand on these vendors.  So much so, that a  lot of people started growing their own produce at home! The great thing about growing your own food is that you get to control the quality, and that space doesn’t matter. You can have a very tiny space, but with efficient use and care, you can also build an impressive kitchen garden at home. Get your teen involved in this project! Gardening is a great activity for your teens. Not only does it forces them to get out and work with their hands, but it also connects them with nature and makes them feel proud of their accomplishments. Gardening is also a great tool for self-development as your teens get to hold and feel proud of something that they have grown on their own. Start small by keeping some house plants at home, and then start encouraging them to grow produce or flowers in your backyard or kitchen garden! It is a great hands-on thing to do for 15-year-olds.

Be A Mentor- If you have multiple kids at home, with a considerable age difference, you can have your older kid teach your younger one and help them with their homework. Teens are often cooped in a corner of the home, talking to friends online, while completely ignoring the rest of the people at home. Foster a relationship with a strong foundation between your kids by engaging your teen to help their younger siblings with their homework. This can really bring them closer and get your teen to be more invested in their loved ones’ lives! If you just have one kid at home, get them to mentor underprivileged kids in the area, or the children of your domestic help!

The Dishes Derby- Nobody hates anything more than the pile of dirty dishes at the end of the day! The lockdown made us all feel like we were in a loop- wiping dishes just to clean them again in an hour. Engage your teens in this housework, by making this task more like a competition on the field. Divide the dishes, and your family up into teams. Your teens can get cutlery and glasses, while the adults can handle pots and pans. Once the dishes and utensils have been divided, the first team to wash all of their wares gets the day off the next day, and the losing team gets to do all the dishes till you have a fresh round The Dishes Derby!
