On World Book Lovers Day, Here Are 9 Must-Reads For Any Age!

Growing up, everyone had a book that was so riveting and life-changing, that it stayed with them for years. Books have the ability to make our transport, emote, spend hours immersed in a made-up world, or even inspired us to take new steps in our lives. Books are an inextricable part of our growth and emotional development, and we believe every child should have the opportunity to find an author and a character they can truly resonate with. In addition to this, books are a great way for your child’s brain development, cognition, and vocabulary as they move on to more advanced reading. So on, International Book Lover’s Day here are 9 books that SHOULD be on your child’s reading list! 

 

  1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar 

This much-loved classic children’s book by Eric Carle has become a must-have on teachers’ bookshelves for years now! It’s a visual delight to flip through this book because each page is a work of art. A simple story about a caterpillar that eats a lot has a deeper message.  It’s a fun way for toddlers and preschoolers to learn basic counting and numbers.  

 

2. How The Sea Became Salty 

This age-old tale of how the sweet sea became salty, written by Sudha Murthy, is crisp and engaging. A simple story offering a more prominent thought, this is suitable for children between the ages 5-8 years. Kids are going to love the simple tale and stunning illustrations! 

 

3. Matilda 

This beloved story of little Matilda is a delightful book for kids. In a world where she’s bullied by the adults around her, Matilda discovers her secret powers. An audiobook is a lovely way to bring alive Roald Dahl’s story of Matilda, the girl with secret powers. If your child likes audiobooks, then do check out the Matilda audiobook! Kate Winslet does a terrific job reading memorable characters like Miss Trunchbull with funny accents and noteworthy voice modulation! 

 

4. The Adventures of Hugo Cabret

This wonderfully illustrated book tells the tale of an orphan, Hugo, who lives in the clock tower of a train station in Paris in the 1930s. Filled with accidental discoveries, automatons, adventures, and friends, this makes for a lovely read. The illustrations really set the mood of the book, and the entire package is quite the experience. 

 

5. To Kill A Mockingbird

Told from the perspective of 9-year-old Scout, To Kill A Mockingbird has been a staple on children’s reading lists across the world since it was released over sixty years ago! This story is set in the small sleepy town of Maycomb, Alabama, and explores issues like racism, inequality, and prejudice with the kindness, honesty, and warmth of a child. 

 

6. Haroun And The Sea of Stories 

From the masterful storyteller, Salman Rushdie comes this fun-filled adventure. Peppered with lovely alliterations and limericks, this book combines many elements to make for a delightful read. It reads as an exciting fairy tale for younger kids;  older kids can see that it’s an allegory for larger concepts like oppression. Although written as a children’s book, it’s equally delightful for parents, too! 

 

7. Northern Lights

The first part of the His Dark Materials series, Northern Lights follows the adventures of Lyra. It is set in a fantastical world and deals with themes like friendship, relationships, and good versus evil in a dynamic way. The best thing about this series is that you can retread it countless times, and each time you will discover something different. Older readers may find a philosophical understanding of the text. Kids will be engrossed by this world of gypsies and magicians and witches and interworld travel! 

 

8. A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning 

The Lemony Snickets series is a witty and clever book following the misfortunes that befall the three Baudelaire orphans. Although it can get a bit dark in terms of the content, this book deals with themes that may be difficult to approach and is appropriate for older children, over 10 years old. 

 

9. Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone 

Introduce the kids to the magical world of Harry Potter with the first book in the series! Harry, an ordinary boy who lives with his nasty aunt and uncle, and cousin, learns of a secret wizarding world to which he actually belongs. This series has captured the hearts and imaginations of readers worldwide, having sold more than 500 million copies! There’s no question – the kids are going to love this and not emerge until they’ve finished every book in the series!
