Watching films and documentaries is always a fun way of learning for kids. Climate change is a hot topic right now, and a pressing issue in todays’ world. It’s important to empower the citizens of tomorrow to understand more about it, and know that their actions have direct impacts on the world around them. 

 

We round up some content, available for streaming right now, that you can watch with children to educate them about climate change:

Our Planet is a follow up to the popular BBC series Planet Earth. Voiced by the iconic David Attenborougj, this groundbreaking series explores various environmental landscapes in the face of climate change. With breathtaking footage, kids get to witness the visual spectacle of nature, and makes them appreciate the natural world, and understand the need for conservation.

2. Chasing Coral

Bringing attention to the fast disappearing coral reefs around the world, Chasing Coral is the result of hundreds of hours of underwater footage, and the efforts of volunteers from thirty countries around the world, and attempts to give a glimpse into the underwater world. Apart from just awareness, it’s important for children to also understand that  solutions exist, and for them to feel empowered to be a part of the change.

3. A Plastic Ocean 

A documentary film like Plastic Ocean makes kids understand their responsibility and role in the fight against climate change. It will open their eyes to the direct consequences of their choices, and make them more aware and mindful about consumption. Impactful films like this one will make kids question, and think for themselves, and may also encourage them to undertake learning activities to understand climate change better.

4. Ice Age: The Meltdown

Ice Age is a beloved children’s animated film series, and in the middle of many laughs also calls attention to the issue of climate change. UK’s Phoenix Cinema has a helpful learning activity sheet for this film – try this out to challenge the kids to think deeper about the film!

5. Happy Feet

This heartwarming animated film about the emperor penguin Mumble is a children’s favourite. As the children get invested in the characters, they also absorb the deeper environmental message in the film. This entertaining film puts nestles an important lesson about climate change very subtly in the plot.
