Learning a new language is a great extra-curricular activity in an evolving multicultural world. Knowing another foreign language is truly an asset these days, but more than that- the act of learning a new language is an excellent activity to stimulate your child’s brain and encourage brain development. The best time to learn a new language is when your child is young as they are able to grasp the fundamentals of the language and grammar very well. However, to aid this process there are certain tips and tricks to help your child learn a foreign language. These tips not only help in making your child learn the language better but also gets them excited to learn the language so that they are invested in this new, exciting activity. So here are some tips and tricks to help your child learn a foreign language –

– The best way to help your child get excited to learn a new language is to make it a group exercise. Members of the family can learn a few phrases in the language that your child is learning, they can even learn basic conversational phrases so that the family can regularly interact with your child and help them have a better recall of new vocabulary.

– One of the most useful tips and tricks to help your child learn a foreign language is to watch movies in the language that they are learning and intermittently use subtitles. Watching a movie in a language that you are trying to learn helps you work on your diction and accent. It also helps your child pick up certain cues related to that language that can help them get better at speaking the language fluently.

If your child has learned a sufficient number of phrases and words, it might be time for them to start writing down a paragraph or two on a random subject in the language that they are learning. Simple topics like ‘Myself’, ‘My Family’ or ‘My Favourite Hobby’ are great places to start to help them get started. Once they start getting better, start helping them write on more descriptive topics to help them improve their vocabulary and improve their grammar.

These audiobooks are engaging and have interesting storylines which not only will help your child look forward to learning a new language but also help deepen their understanding of the fundamentals of a language.

– Repeat and recall. The best way to remember anything is to learn a few words, repeat them to yourself one or two times, and then try to recall them or relate them to something later on. For example, if your child is at that stage where they are trying to learn new words to improve their vocabulary in French and Spanish- establish a daily quota of words that they can learn daily. Ask them to read the words aloud, perfect the pronunciation and ask them to recall those words at a later time. Keep your child accountable by doing a weekly review of the new words learned and encourage them to use it in a sentence so that they are not only able to remember the meaning of the word but are also able to use it in the correct context.
