With things all over the world shutting down in the wake of the pandemic, a lot of venues and activities got shut to the general public – in all fields, be it sports or culture or science or adventure or outdoor activities. And kids have really had it hard, missing out on things we had at one point really taken for granted.
There’s of course no substitute to an actual, real experience, but we round up some virtual activities that will capture the kids’ imagination:
A Museum Trip
During the pandemic, some of the world’s most famous museums opened up their doors (virtually of course) for free. Putting on display high definition images and tours of their pieces, it gave ordinary people stuck at home to view some of the most interesting paintings, sculptures, and pieces of art. Supplement kids’ school lessons with some fun learning with a virtual visit to a museum like the Smithsonian Natural History Museum
Online Dance Class
Attakkalari is a well-renowned organisation based in Bangalore. They provide training in Contemporary Dance, Classical Dance and Kalarippayattu. Their aim is to make these performance arts accessible to everyone. Let kids pick up new skills, improve their fitness, and have a whole lot of fun with contemporary dance activities with Attakalari’s online classes!
A Literature Festival For Kids
Neev Literature Festival is the only literature festival for kids in India. They’ve organised some fantastic events in previous years, but took it all online during the pandemic. With the line “Love to read, read to love”, their mission is to create readers for life! They host panel discussions with children’s authors, reading challenges, book guides, quizzes, and many other fun reading activities for kids. Do check out their Instagram page to check out the latest virtual events for kids.
Chrome Music Lab
Chrome Music Lab is one of our favourite free learning websites for kids! It offers super fun music activities that will make learning music very simple for kids. They can try out various experiments like “completing the pattern” which teaches them basic concepts that make the building blocks of music.
Wildlife Live Streams
If your child is a nature enthusiast, then don’t miss out on wildlife live streams from webcams across the world! Lonely Planet has a pretty good list. Virtually and seamlessly travel through the forests of Africa, China, and Alaska and have the wonderful experience of watching animals in their natural habitat, unobtrusively. Whether it’s otters thrashing around in water, or an African safari, kids are sure to be glued to this unedited footage!
