5 Fun Science Experiments For Young Kids At Home

The benefits of learning by doing cannot be discounted. Due to schools being reduced to zoom calls every day, it is difficult to make key concepts in science and math fun for kids. This is where you come in by organizing simple and fun science experiments at home that make these subjects interesting and easy to learn for kids. By seeing the actual application played out in real life, kids will definitely take an interest in learning scientific concepts. Here are some ideas for fun science experiments for kids-

Apples and Oxidation- A simple science experiment using kitchen ingredients, this is sure to amaze and capture your child’s attention. Slice an apple and let each slice soak in different liquids. Check the coloration after every 3 minutes, 6 minutes, and so on. You can play a guessing game with your kids as to which liquid will be changing the color of the apple the most. By doing so, you are not only teaching the property and effect of different liquids, but you are also teaching your child the practice of creating a hypothesis before every experiment. Very Scientific!

Milky Way- This is really a fun and colorful experiment, again using a kitchen ingredient to nurture the love of science in kids! You need a shallow bowl of milk, some food coloring, an earbud, and some dish soap. This is a great experiment to show the immiscibility of some liquids. Demonstrate by adding a few drops of food coloring to the bowl of milk and you will observe that these drops remain as blogs on the surface. But add a little dish soap to the mix, and the color will mix together to form a beautiful hue. What does it say? The food coloring by itself won’t mix with the milk, but if you add another liquid-like dish soap, you can break the surface tension and let the colors mix!

Bread-y Scientific- We sure are making science experiments easy for you! This time we will see how bread can help kids learn! This experiment using bread uses the grossly fascinating concept of mold to educate your young kids. By using different additives like salt, vinegar, etc, you can see how different ingredients can accelerate or slow down the process of mold on bread. Additionally, you can see the growth of mold on bread touched by hands that aren’t washed, versus the bread that has been touched by hands washed and scrubbed for 20 seconds. Trust me, this will get them washing!

The Balloon Experiment-  A mess-free alternative to the famous vinegar and baking soda experiment, and a fun way to teach them the properties of gas, these balloon experiments can also serve as a hack if you have a party coming soon! By putting baking soda in an empty balloon and vinegar in a balloon and if you attach the balloon to the mouth of the bottle, the vinegar pours into the baking soda and the resulting gas is enough to inflate the balloon on its own!

Egg-celent Experiment- A good ol’ egg experiment! A great experiment of expansion of solids, this will surely teach a property or two on the matter to your young kids. For this, you need a peeled hard-boiled egg and a glass bottle. This experiment includes fire, so make sure you have fire safety on hand. When you try to insert this hard-boiled egg into a bottle, it obviously doesn’t fit, but there’s a trick! Put in a burning piece of paper inside the bottle, the burning in the bottle causes the air to expand and the pressure to go up. When the oxygen in the bottle runs up, the air contracts sucking the egg through the bottle opening! A great dramatic and informational experiment, this is sure to fascinate them!
