6 Drawing Techniques To Try Out With Your Kids

Drawing has several benefits. Apart from being a fine stimulant for the right side of the brain, it’s a terrific way to keep creativity alive. Kids of all ages can explore their creative side through drawing exercises. It can also be extremely calming for some.

With any creative activity, the process is more important than the end result. It can be a challenge to keep drawing from getting boring and repetitive. If you’re running out of things for kids to draw, here are 6 ways to keep it fresh and interesting for the kids. All of these exercises have easy things for kids to draw and are also great fun for adults, so grab a pencil and some paper and fall in love with drawing alongside your kids!

1. Blind Contour Drawing

Blind Contour Drawing  is a classic drawing exercise, in which you draw the outline of a subject without looking at the paper. The subject can be anything – something outside the window, an everyday object, or even a self-portrait! Blind Contour Drawings are a great way to learn about  lines, sharpen your observation skills, and they also help improve hand-eye communication. Watch this video for more detailed instructions on how to go about it.

2. Draw-Along

Follow Super Simple Draw on YouTube for some enjoyable drawing activities for kids. The idea here is to make drawing fun and simple by pulling out some paper and pencils/markers/crayons, and drawing as per the instructions on the video. They have a large collection of engaging videos which gives kids something new and easy to draw with every video.

3. Chalk Drawing

A blast from the past! This super simple and easy activity will take you back to your childhood, and requires nothing except chalk and a floor or wall to draw on. Check out this video for some ideas on how to make good old chalk drawing more exciting. Wary of chalk dust? Try Apsara Color Chalks for a dustless experience!

4. Drawing with Your Non-Dominant Hand

Drawing with the hand you don’t usually use is a great way to get unblocked – at any age! This is not about making an amazing drawing, or training yourself to be as adept with your non-dominant hand as you are with your dominant hand. This drawing exercise is about unseeing things, and processing visuals in a way we don’t usually process them.

5. Comic Drawing

Drawing comics is an enjoyable form of expression, and helps with making sense of the world around us through humour. Lynda Barry is a renowned cartoonist, author, and teacher. In her two hour masterclass, attended by people of all ages across the world, she teaches various drawing exercises of varying levels of complexity. She also has a bunch of short and fun tutorials up on her YouTube channel.

6. Upside-Down Drawing

This is a technique to silence the dominant, analytical left side of your brain, which helps with perceiving objects more accurately. In this exercise, you must copy a drawing – except it’s upside down! To get a better understanding about how to do this exercise, watch this video.

Having high quality tools always elevates an activity, and also encourages and motivates kids.  Of Japanese design, Camlin Kokuyo drawing pencils are a solid set of drawing pencils that provide the ultimate experience.

Corot sketch pads are the high quality and sturdy paper that your budding artist needs.
